The project addresses the renovation of one of the most beautiful railway buildings in the world and part of the national historical heritage, with its steel vaults, stone façade and its great access staircase designed in 1931. A peculiar feature is the elevated height of the rail level, which requires vertical links with the street level. The station was regarded as a new aggregation site where new business and cultural opportunities may be developed, where the removal of architectural barriers and new safety systems allow the overhaul of technical systems needed to enhance accessibility and safety for everybody. High profile retail galleries act as a magnet on the ever growing number of users, and express designed urban furniture and quality definition of interior public areas contribute to offer opportunities to business and leisure, enhancing the real estate value and the overall perceived image of the station. The restyling was achieved following a new conception of space: the optimisation of available surfaces, the reuse of unused rooms, the al transformation and the optimisation of routes.works executed at Milano Centrale station include two parking areas devoted to very short term parking, for travellers, inbound or outbound, picked at or brought to the station by car, a new Tramway terminus with new external finishing and furniture, new access to the underground line.
